Instrumentation, Controls & Power Electronics Engineer
Company Description Hydram Dynamics is an Icelandic tech company developing large-scale liquid piston inertial evaporators which efficiently transform industrial waste heat into process steam. Benefits of the equipment include reduced reliance on natural gas, lower emissions and cooling. Hydram’s equipment will soon be sold to thermally intensive sectors, including chemical manufacturing, pulp-board, food-beverage, refineries, textiles etc. Its cooling properties will furthermore be used to cool down data center facility loops. Demanding, mission-driven environment for professionals interested in contributing to the development of extremely complex three story high industrial process hardware solution. Hydram's prototypes are wired with +40 high frequency sensors like an F1 race car collecting data on pressures, temperatures, flow directions and velocity, surface levels - with multitude of relays controling its precision timed operation. Role Description This full-time, on-site role is based at the company’s modern and spacious headquarters in Garðabær, Iceland. The position focuses on the electronics, sensing, actuation and control systems. Day-to-day work includes designing, building, calibrating and integrating sensor systems (temperature, pressure, level, flow, position, vibration, etc.), working with ESP32s and other microcontrollers for data acquisition and local control, freestyle soldering and wiring of small electronics and maintaining a Linux based server and database of test sensor data. The role also requires knowledge and experience in three phase power electronics wiring motors and VFDs. Responsibilities also include planning and executing tests, debugging sensor and power electronics issues in a lab/industrial setting, documenting setups and findings and overall contributing to the transition from prototype to more robust industrial implementations. The role is hands-on and collaborative within a small team requiring candidates to be practical, results-driven problem-solvers who enjoy building and fixing real hardware. Core requirements: - Experience with ESP32 (or similar microcontrollers) for data acquisition, control or IoT-style instrumentation as well as programming in Python and C++. - Hands-on work with small electronics: soldering (including freestyle/prototype wiring), preparing and reading schematics, using basic lab tools (multimeter, oscilloscope preferred). - Understanding of electric motors and VFDs, including experience or strong familiarity with three-phase, several-kW systems wiring and safety. - Comfortable operating in a fast-paced prototype environment with quick iterations and builds and overall strong practical problem-solving skills. Relevant background: - Degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, automation, electronics, mechanical engineering with strong electronics focus, or equivalent practical experience. - Familiarity with control. Feedback, PID. - Experience programing simple readable code in Python and C++ (not solely relying on AI). Optional but beneficial: - Experience with industrial sensors, high-frequency data acquisition, or logging systems. - Work with three-phase motor controllers, VFDs, or similar power electronics. - Understanding of physics, thermodynamics, heat-transfer, fluids. - Knowledge of process equipment, steam systems, or large mechanical prototypes. - Ability to work collaboratively on-site in a small, early-stage team. Hydram is an early-stage environment with a mission-focused mindset. The right applicant is a smart, results-driven, hard worker who's looking for an exciting and fun journey.
