PhD Student in Geology

A temporary 70-75% position as a PhD student in Geology is open for application at the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland, for the project ICE-MELT: Magma Evolution and Timing of Eruptions on Langjökull Glacier in the Modern Era: Links between Glacial Surges and Volcanic Activity. The project's goal is to investigate the relationship between glacial surges and volcanic activity in Langjökull using an interdisciplinary approach involving paleomagnetism, petrology, and volcanic physics. The selected PhD student will actively participate in all aspects of the project: fieldwork, sampling, geochemical and petrological analysis, paleomagnetic measurements for dating, data processing and analysis, and writing scientific articles. Planned research includes sampling trips and geological mapping at Prestahnúkur and Hveravellir in the vicinity of Langjökull. Special emphasis is placed on an interdisciplinary approach combining geochemistry, paleomagnetism, and volcanic physics, providing the PhD student with the opportunity to learn diverse methods for assessing magma chamber depth, eruption ages, and the nature of volcanic activity during the project. The research will enhance our knowledge of how deglaciation affects volcanic systems, which is important for assessing volcanic hazards in Iceland and other glaciated volcanic areas.
