Postdoctoral Researcher in LiDAR Point Cloud Analysis of Icelandic Turf Houses

A full-time postdoctoral researcher position is open for application, temporarily for 12 months, at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iceland. The position is part of the research project "Measurements and analysis of moisture and temperature conditions along with structural monitoring of turf houses: Preservation for the future." The project is a collaborative effort between the University of Iceland and the National Museum of Iceland and is funded by the Rannís Research Fund. A multidisciplinary research group with expertise in structural engineering, architecture, structural condition monitoring, building materials, Icelandic building heritage, and preservation is involved. Icelandic turf houses are a unique part of Iceland's building heritage. Their turf roofs rest on timber frames where movements and deformations have been observed. It is not clear to what extent these movements are due to normal seasonal changes or long-term processes, such as settlement or structural deterioration. Repeated 3D measurements offer an opportunity to measure these changes and develop methods for long-term monitoring of the structures of these complex historical buildings. The National Museum of Iceland owns and maintains a unique collection of historical turf houses throughout Iceland. Three houses, Keldur, Laufás, and Grenjaðarstaður, have been selected for detailed monitoring in the project. The research project as a whole combines monitoring of environmental conditions, research on material properties, numerical simulations, and structural monitoring. The postdoctoral researcher's workplace will be at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iceland, and they will work closely with researchers at the University of Iceland and specialists from the National Museum of Iceland.
