Senior Network Engineer – Datacenter & Cloud

📍 ReykjavíkIT & TechNo Icelandic requiredExternal

1984 Hosting is looking for an experienced Senior Network Engineer to help design, build and operate the network infrastructure behind our existing hosting services and our new Icelandic public cloud. This is a senior hands-on engineering role covering datacenter networking, Internet routing, Linux networking and cloud network architecture. Our infrastructure supports shared hosting, email hosting, VPS services, distributed storage and a growing public-cloud platform across multiple datacenter environments. We are looking for someone with a strong understanding of networking at protocol level who is comfortable diagnosing complex problems across routers, switches, Linux hosts, virtualisation platforms and distributed systems. The role includes both operation of existing production infrastructure and the implementation of new network architecture for our public cloud. You will work closely with our Linux, storage and software engineers and have substantial influence over how the network evolves. Deep understanding of networking concepts and protocols is more important to us than experience with any particular vendor. 1984 Hosting is an Icelandic hosting and infrastructure company founded in 2006. We operate shared hosting, email hosting, VPS services and other infrastructure services for thousands of customers in Iceland and internationally. Privacy, security, freedom of expression and trust are central to how 1984 operates. Alongside our existing services, we are developing a new Icelandic public cloud based largely on open technologies and infrastructure located in Iceland. This is not a traditional corporate-network administration role. The work is focused on datacenter, hosting and cloud infrastructure where networking is a fundamental part of the platform itself. The role is particularly suited to someone who enjoys understanding exactly why packets are going where they are going, is equally comfortable discussing BGP policy and analysing a packet capture, and wants to help design infrastructure rather than simply maintain a predefined network.
