Vík í Mýrdal is a village of a few hundred people that hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors a year, so its hotels, restaurants, tour operators and shops hire far beyond the local population — mostly people from abroad, mostly in English, and usually with staff accommodation because there is nowhere else to live. Black beaches, glaciers and a tight international community come with the job.
